How AAM 2025 Reinforced Museums as Tech-Ready, Trusted Institutions

From May 6–9, Los Angeles became the epicenter of cultural innovation as over 4,000 museum professionals, creatives, and industry leaders gathered for AAM 2025.

American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo the event showcased how museums are embracing innovation to remain relevant, inclusive, and impactful in an increasingly digital and dynamic world.

The opening general session, titled “Testament in Trust,” set an energetic and thoughtful tone. It began with a spirited musical performance by the award-winning, all-female mariachi group Las Colibrí, followed by an inspiring address by AAM President & CEO Marilyn Jackson on the evolving role of museums as trusted institutions.

The keynote conversation featured powerful insights from Cindi Alvitre, professor and cultural creator; Cheech Marin, entertainer and art advocate; and David Ono, journalist and storyteller—moderated by Jessie Kornberg, President & CEO of the Skirball Cultural Center.

Their dialogue emphasized the importance of cultural representation, preservation, and community trust within the museum space.

Beyond the keynotes and panels, attendees participated in hands-on workshops at LA’s renowned museums, engaged in meaningful networking events at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, and explored the latest tools and technologies at the MuseumExpo. The atmosphere was one of active learning and collaboration, underscoring museums’ increasing role as agents of change.
